Project intro
Foster youth workers’ understanding of and preparedness to promote young migrants’ digital and media literacy through critical thinking and motivation.
Overview
The project is based on a previous project, coordinated by KulturLife: TeDiCom (2019-1-DE02-KA204-006083). This project aims to work with a diverse group of European partners on how to promote digital literacy in a way that makes societies resilient to fake news and hate speech. The most important finding of our project is that the main cause for the spread of fake news is not a lack of technical digital skills, but a lack of digital literacy, and above all a lack of motivation to question digitally transmitted information. We find that this need affects not only youth and young adults, but teachers and youth workers as well. Therefore, we have developed this new project to specifically address this problem conceptually and practically for youth workers. We chose young migrants and refugees as the target group since they are at risk and are likely to be involved in initiatives of non-formal/formal youth work.
Aim
This project aims to provide resources to improve the quality and innovation of youth workers’ initiatives in promoting the development of young migrants’ digital readiness, focusing on critical thinking skills for digital, information and media literacy to support young migrants that have recently arrived in European countries.
Objectives
The main aim of this project is to foster youth workers’ understanding of and preparedness to promote young migrants’ digital/information/media literacy through critical thinking and motivation, impacting inclusion processes. Specifically, it aims to:
1. Familiarize youth workers with digital competences and their relation to critical thinking processes
2. Prepare youth workers to assess young migrants’ critical thinking, digital experiences and literacy
3. Assess young migrants’ needs and attitudes regarding digital literacy and critical thinking
4. Collaboratively develop a framework for young migrants’ digital literacy development with youth workers
5. Foster youth workers preparedness to implement the Building a Digital World for All eLearning course
6. Foster young migrants’ critical thinking, motivation, and digital/information/media literacy through an eLearning course
Outputs
The main outcome is youth workers’ increased competences in dealing with young migrants and their use of digital media. This goal is achieved through the combination of training material for youth workers and an online course that they can use in their daily work, focusing on promoting motivation of target groups to apply these techniques. Main results: Training sessions for youth workers; “Building a Digital World for All” online course, eLearning platform, and handbook for youth workers.
